Our project examined local news organizations based in New Mexico or on its borders, producing coverage for local audiences. That research focus left out some valuable news by other outlets, including those below.

Capital and Main: A California-based nonprofit with a New Mexico reporter, Jerry Redfern, who covers the intersection of politics and the oil and gas industry in New Mexico.

ProPublica: A national nonprofit news service with a New Mexico-based reporter, Mary Hudetz, who covers tribes and federal agencies that serve Native Americans.

ICT (formerly Indian Country Today): A nonprofit multimedia news outlet based in Phoenix, ICT covers the Indigenous world, including New Mexico.

Native America Calling / National Native News: Two national radio programs produced in Albuquerque by Alaska-based Koahnic Broadcasting, including coverage of Native American issues in New Mexico.

Blogs of Note

Desert Sage: A personal blog and newsletter that explores issues in the news. Written by veteran journalist Algernon D’Ammassa based in southern New Mexico.

haussamen.com: A blog and newsletter providing reporting and commentary by longtime journalist Heath Haussamen, based in southern New Mexico.

New Mexico Politics with Joe Monahan: Political gossip, analysis and commentary with some on-the-record reporting by veteran journalist Joe Monahan, based in Albuquerque.

Mercury Messenger: A blog and newsletter by V. B. Price — a former reporter who has been publishing articles on New Mexico politics, culture, human rights and the environment since 1971.

Piñon Post: A blog run by a GOP state lawmaker, publishing conservative analysis and commentary. Based in Alamogordo.

The Candle: A political watchdog site edited by Bruce Wetherbee. (Based in Massachusetts. Site has been inactive since July 2025.)
